Crime rate numbers are simply the average number of offenses per 1,000 inhabitants for the specific offenses of: Homicide, Forcible Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny, Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft and Arson.

For crime rates calculated in this manner a lower number is better.

The source for the above statistics was the Maine Department of Public Safety which compiles this information via U.C.R. (Uniform Crime Reporting) data, supplied to them by the Police Department's of each City.
