Chief William "Bill" Welch joined the Lewiston Police Department on September 20, 1976 and has come up through the ranks to achieve his present position as Chief.

Bill began serving the Department as a Patrol Officer, and was promoted to Youth Officer in the Lewiston Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division on October 30, 1981.

He was subsequently promoted to Patrol Sergeant on June 13, 1990, during which time he was placed in charge of the Department's 1st Bicycle Team on March 10, 1991.

Bill was  promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on March 3, 1993, and was appointed Lieutenant of the Criminal Investigative Division on October 26, 1994.

On February 29, 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief.

On March 17th, 1998, Bill Welch became  Acting Chief for the Lewiston Police Department, and on June 12, 1998 was officially appointed as Chief.

Bill has served in the Air Force, is a graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, and the FBI/NA Academy.
