Juvenile Firesetters Program

PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of this program is to provide education to children and parents in the prevention and consequences of fires through a collaborative effort of local Fire, Police, Social Services and School personnel.

SCHOOL OUTLINE

The Juvenile Firesetters Program will run on a chosen Saturday  approximately 3-4 times per year or as required by the fire prevention officer and program coordinator. The hours of the program are 8:00-3:30pm including a lunch and break time. Several topics will be presented during the day including fire safety, laws and legal consequences, and  components of mental health and psychological factors pertaining to those who set fires and those who live with firesetters.

 The class size will be limited to10-14 students. Each student will be accompanied by either a parent or legal guardian who will be expected to participate in the program. The child can only be enrolled by one of the involved agencies and after a Juvenile Fire Setter survey has been completed by the local agency.  Students from 10-14 years of age will be allowed to participate in the program. Those who are younger or older will be assessed   and allowed to participate on a case by case situation. Permission slips will need to be signed by the legal guardian.

 The program is to assist local agencies and to educate the child and guardian(s) and will not guarantee the  complete cessation of any fire activity by the child.
