The Mark Day Story

Officer Mark Day joined the Lewiston Police Department on January 3rd, 1995.  He was a recent graduate of Northeastern University and Southern Maine Technical Institute and held two college degrees in Law Enforcement.  Mark quickly distinguished himself as an excellent officer and within three years he was assigned as one of the department's Field Training Officers.

In December of 1999, Mark fell ill and was rushed to Maine Medical Center where he underwent surgery to repair a tear in his aorta.  In May of 2000, Mark returned to work , first on light duty, then returning to the road.  Mark's return to duty was a welcomed event by the remainder of the department and things appeared to be "back to normal."

On September 11, 2000  Mark did not report for his scheduled patrol shift.  Officer Matt Cashman, one of Mark's close friends, was sent to Mark's apartment to find what happened.  On his arrival at Mark's apartment, Matt found Mark was not responsive.  Although attempts were made to revive Mark, he passed away.

On September 15th, 2000, the entire Lewiston Police Department staff turned out to bid farewell to Mark.  The Auburn Police Department provided officers to answer calls so that members could attend the funeral.  Members of the law enforcement community from Maine and New Hampshire also attended the funeral held at St.Peter and Paul Church.  Life Flight of Maine provided a fly-over with one of their helicopters as the Lewiston Police Honor Guard folded the American Flag gracing Mark's coffin.  Lewiston PD Honor Guard Piper ,Officer Scot Bradeen played a fitting tribute to Mark on the bagpipes in the tradition of Law Enforcment in the United States.  A rifle team from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department provided a twenty-one gun salute as Mark departed for his final resting place.
