Drug Abuse Resistance Education

D.A.R.E. has been going strong in Lewiston since 1990. Since its inception, D.A.R.E. has gone through numerous changes both on the National level (curriculum revisions and enhancement), as well as within our own program (participation in co-operative games, field trips and guest speakers to mention a few).

The 17 week core curriculum is taught by a trained uniformed officer at all 10 elementary schools. The program graduates 500+ kids per year. D.A.R.E. continues to be a cornerstone to the Lewiston communitys efforts in nurturing drug and violence free children.

In addition, D.A.R.E.s drug and violence prevention program is consistent with Lewiston Police Departments efforts to provide the citizens of Lewiston with an integrated community policing approach to law enforcement.

D.A.R.E. offers students the opportunity to gain a trustworthy adult friend, develop a positive attitude toward law enforcement personnel, and acquire greater respect for the law.

Gang Resistance Education And Training

G.R.E.A.T. is a collaborative effort by Police Officers, educators, students, parents, and the community to offer an educational program designed to help middle school students become responsible members of their communities, by setting goals for themselves, resisting pressures, learning how to resolve conflict, and understanding how gangs impact the quality of their life.

The eight week curriculum has been presented to seventh graders at Lewiston Middle School since 1993. Every year, approximately 400+ students graduate from the program.

Presenting D.A.R.E. to sixth graders and G.R.E.A.T. the following year has proven to be a productive approach in providing comprehensive pro-active drug and violence education to Lewiston youngsters.
