Lewiston Police Department
Citizen Police Academy |

Understanding Through EducationThe Lewiston Police Department was one of the first departments in the state to offer a Citizen Police Academy. The first such Academy was offered in 1998 and the department has offered one Academy per year.
The intent of the Academy is to give members of the public a working knowledge of the Lewiston Police Department.
Participants meet once a week for eleven consecutive weeks. The sessions are held in the classroom at the Lewiston Police Department at 171 Park St. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to a traditional police academy, but the students are not potential police officers. They, like you, are concerned citizens.
Classroom instruction, tours, demonstrations, and hands on practicals are incorporated to provide an interactive experience. All instructors are members of the Lewiston Police Department. The motto of the Citizen Police Academy is "Understanding Through Education."
The more information the public has about their police department, the less suspicion, fear and misconceptions will exist. All sessions are designed to give an overview of the Lewiston Police Department and its various functions: from hiring practices to training, patrol and investigation.
We believe that an informed public is better able to make decisions about the Lewiston Police Department. We hope that this program will assist us in breaking down any barriers between us and the public that we serve.

How to apply for participation in the
Citizen Police Academy
ALL applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
This will be a ten week program, classes will meet:
Date: Each Tuesday Evening
Time: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Place: Lewiston Police Department
Class size will be limited to 20 people, so we ask that only those truly interested in making a commitment to the class apply. An 80% attendance rate is required to successfully pass the Citizens Police Academy.
The instructors will all be members of the Lewiston Police Department, and they will provide instruction and information concerning a particular area of their profession. This is NOT a police officer candidate school, but a means by which the department can allow the citizens of Lewiston to see first hand how the department operates.
A background check will be conducted on all applicants, and those with felony convictions or extensive criminal backgrounds will not be accepted. This will not be an open forum to discuss previous law enforcement contacts or grievances, but an opportunity for applicants to learn about the department and for the department to learn about the concerns of the applicants.
